Remixes: Mark Mendes, Reuben Keeney, Caninesounds, digital:punks & Schadenfreude
Ok so we’ve got a massive set of remixes here for you people…we even had to make the font really tiny to fit it all in. We are so damn nice eh? First up we’re very proud to present the Mark Mendes remix. On an upbeat, smooth as velvet tip he starts with an infectious beat, gradually introducing percussion. He builds towards the intensly satisfying first drop, releasing into the echoing sample and introducing mesmerising synths that will have you reaching for the lasers. As it builds to the second drop the sample becomes more metallic and the uplifter builds to a crescendo which tantalising drops into an understated purring rhythm with shakers and synths winding their way in and out, giving the music texture and movement. As it comes to the breakdown the track is stripped back to almost just the effected vocal and a whole series of uplifters raise the tension and drop you right back to that infectious beat. This will surely raise the temperature on any dance floor!
Canine calibre quality up next! They’re bringing a rougher tougher edge to their remix of ‘Future’. The first build comes after just a minute and incorporates a lovely grimey synth and drops into a base line punctuated by synths and samples using filtering to switch it up and introducing a new panning line that sits just above the bass and a higher, purer synth adding weight to the top end. The breakdown is a brilliant mix of off beat pulsing, filtered sounds, percussion, and a wicked little stab just before the drop, which i must say is well worth the wait! Kicking back in with that aggressive bass and crunchy synth. This remix is a proper belter!
Always abreast of the hottest new talent we are mighty pleased to present Reuben Keeney at the controls of this minimal masterpiece with his remix of ‘Future’. What really stands out about this track is the percussion, it has a tribal kick that drives the groove, and a shaker roll, but most unusually he uses stabs of synth sounds to act as further percussion making this a really tactile track. Sitting under all this action is a warm subby bass that leaves plenty of room for eveything else to ride on top of it. The build up is big, using a massive uplifter and drops an energetic rhythm with more of that fabulous shaker bizznizz and an off beat synth and just when you thought he was done he builds again to another level of energy, breathing new life into it where other producers might be tempted to call it a day. A cheeky little number from our wee Irish magic maker.
Next up on the remix we have the aptly named ‘Voodoo’ remix of Zulu Dancer by the shining new talent digital:punks. This is their second release with Spin Out and we’re anticipating big things from these boys. Get out your grass skirts and hold onto your maracas cos this tune is going to get your feet stomping! The throbbing beat and atmospheric calls take you away to the Rio carnival meanwhile the ominous synth adds a Prodigy-like element of danger. It grows and grows as elements are added and the beat brings it to a crescendo that drops you right back into the thick of the carnival atmosphere! A brilliant remix from these budding young starlets.
Next in line is the ‘Laid Back’ remix of Zulu Dancer. It’s an understated track with fabulous production; subtle yet effective. The overall feeling of the track is blissed out grooves combined with a tribal feeling so evocative you can feel the warm sand between your toes. Fizzing synths add texture and variety while the gentle rhythm keeps you moving. All in all a throbbing beauty certain to be welcomed this summer at Café del Mar.
And finally we’ve got another new talent, Schadenfreude, who has certainly put his stamp on this remix of ‘As The Record Spins’. This is a proper banger, make no mistake. The feisty kick and growling bass are balanced by video-game stabs. For the build up think the Guinness advert horses crossed with the launch of Apollo 13, and in much the same way it explodes back in but leaving room to grow to the introduction of the chopped sample, after which it drops back in more high energy than ever, bringing us to a throbbing, pulsing synth to signal the build up which is anything but minimal. This is a millitant, high octane track with more twists and turns than a day at Alton Towers. Phew!
