Alex Young Interview

As you probably know if you’ve been following the Spin Out camp, we’re pretty excited to be working with one of the world’s best DJ / Producers, Alex Young. He’s renowned all over the world for his slick, progressive, techy beats and he’s just recently won the Best Minimal Artist 2009 on the Beatport Awards!

His latest release for us is a collaboration with Scella titled 2012 and has gained plaudits from some of the big players in the industry. It’s hovered in the Beatport charts for ages…in fact its still in there somewhere, so don’t miss out on this one. And the Adam Shaw remix is damn fine too, if we do say so ourselves.

We managed to catch up with him for a few minutes to find out what he’s listening to and where he drums up his inspiration…

Well done for winning Best Minimal Artist on Beatport, How much did winning that award mean to you?
Alex: A Lot. Because it means so much for the Latin American and Colombian Scene, it is the first International Award for a Colombian Producer. And it means a lot to get that kind of support.

Who or what has been your biggest influence?
Alex: Well, lots of people…..the first influence was my mom, she is a music lover so since I was a lil’ kid I was listening to Disco and Electronic music. I used to listen to Pet Shop Boys, Technotronic, Corona, Abba, Bonnie M, Donna Summers etc.

What are you listening to at the moment?
Alex: Ufff! Korn, Beastie Boys (love the classics), Rage Against The Machine, Metallica, Incubus (the classic ones too), and several more…

What was the first record you bought?
Alex: I think it was a Technotronic’s Cassette…

What is the most embarrassing CD you own?
Alex: Embarrassing? LoL! Maybe Robbie Williams Greatest Hits , I dunno…..that’s embarrassing.

Which piece of equipment is absolutely essential for your sound?
Alex: Sony MDR-V300 Control Studio, Love those Headphones!

Which of your gigs stand out as being the most special and why?
Alex: Probably in Moca (Dominican Republic), I was expecting a European crowd, but it was mostly Dominican people, it was a really energetic set with fantastic people, I played 6 hours non stop!

What would you say is the best and worst thing about the Dance scene at the moment?
Alex: The best is the new talented people that appear all the time, there is a lot of new genres and the music is getting better and better. The worst I think is piracy, its happening everywhere…so sad.

If you were trying to seduce someone, what songs would you have to include on a mix tape?
Alex: Trentemoller – Miss You (Aris Grammenos Remix) or The Knight Of The Jaguar – Rolando (Original Mix)

What are your plans for the summer?
Alex: Well, i really don’t know….i’m always happy with my simple life. But I do hope to be on a European tour, which is in the booking stages now.
