Meet two of the Spin Out Residents Drew Harding and Glenn Wallace (formerly digital:punks). They may have had a name change but they’re still rockin’ it out at all of our gigs and producing some badaaaassssss tunes for your pretty little ears.
Who or what first got you into producing and djing?
Drew: Djing – was when I went to an under 18’s rave (I know!) in Guernsey and I had the most party experience time all because of the music the DJs were playing (I think they played every house/trance track I was into at the time) and I thought to myself, that’s what I want to do!
Producing – The moment I realised I could put beats together one my own computer that sold it for me, I knew I loved music and djing but producing seemed like the next natural step for me.
Glenn: I remember watching the Kevin & Perry film when I was at school and thinking how cool it would be to be Eyeball Paul! The following Christmas I got my first set of belt drive decks and I fell in love with the whole thing.
Who or what has been the biggest influence since then?
Drew: Clubbing in london has got to be my biggest influence – the likes of Turnmills and Ministry of Sound have really influenced the way I look at the industry. As for producing there is so much that has influenced me that I can’t say what has been the biggest thing.
Glenn: Errrr….. Drew & Jesus.
What have been up to lately and what can we expect from you over the next couple of months?
Glenn: We’ve been busy working on a remix for a new Adam Shaw track coming out on Spin Out very soon. We’re both also spending a lot of time in the studio individually working on original material, which will hopefully see the light of day soon
Drew: As well as working on the Adam Shaw remix with Glenn, I’ve been working on finishing my BA Hons and have been neglecting the DJing and Producing. Once August is out of the way I’ll be dedicating a lot more time to mixing and making tracks again. – don’t tell my girlfriend, she won’t be happy!
Who is your all time musical hero?
Glenn: I have too many musical heroes to just mention one!
Drew: How the hell am I meant to answer that?!?! Not really a hero but someone I admire would be Stevie Wonder as I love pretty much anything he has done – oh and I can’t fail to mention Michael Jackson, I didn’t actually realise just how much great music he had made until he died and everyone started playing it all again.
Where do you go out?
Drew: I go to the Hotel Bar just round the corner from my house, the Stoke Pub in Guildford, I also like the White House by the river in Guildford. I go for walks with my girlfriend to the Guildford downs when the weather is good and I also like to randomly drive with my girlfriend on a Sunday afternoon to see where we end up. When the weekend comes around I’m either working for spin out at their events or I’m partying in London.
Glenn: Mainly in London, MOS, Fabric, I don’t get out as much as I used to!
Is there an all-time favourite track you wish you’d produced?
Glenn: Nothing really springs to mind!
Drew: I really wish I had made David Morales ‘Needin’ U’ – what a classic, everytime I hear it, it gives me goose bumps. I would have also liked to have produced ‘I wish it could be Christmas everyday’ by Wizzard – just think, every year they get a big fat cheque, guaranteed! That’s the pension sorted.
What’s the single most exciting thing about dance music at the moment in your opinion?
Drew: I believe it’s the fact that I know if I work hard enough and meet the right people this could become my career.
Glenn: Seeing producers move away from the darker minimal sounds, and implementing more housey elements into their tracks.
If you could have anyone remix any of your tracks, who would it be and why?
Glenn: Livio & Roby – Over the past year or so I think I’ve bought every single one of their tunes that has come out on Beatport. They have a very distinctive sound but at the same time none of their tracks sound the same. I always look to their tracks for inspiration when making a tune, so to have them remix one of our tunes would be pretty special
Drew: Oh that is a tricky one – my favourite artists evolve with the music I play so I guess right now I would have to go for Audiofly. They are just so damn good, everytime they make a tune!!! I would love to have them work their magic on my material.
Which is your personal favourite track that you’ve produced & why?
Glenn: I think that’d be the remix of Richard Dinsdale – She Wants Me. Me and Drew made the track on my crappy old PC (Which is an achievement in itself) and spent lots of time making sure the mixdown was right, so I was really happy with the overall quality of that track.
Drew: Yeah that was a good one especially on Glenn’s PC – mission. However my personally favourite I would have to say my unreleased breakbeat bootleg of Iio ‘Rapture’. I found this really spacious acapella with some amazing chill out synths behind it, so I whacked some chunky breakbeat drums behind it and it just worked…. One of my favourite tracks to relax to!
What are your favourite production tools / gadgets?
Drew: Without a doubt it has to be the software programme Ableton 8 Suite. I could choose plug ins or effects units but for me I am 100% in love with everything Ableton has to offer.
Glenn: I’m the same, I’m loving the new version of Ableton, it’s got lots of new FX and a couple of new instruments which I’m enjoying experimenting with at the minute. Also a programme called GURU, which we tend to use a lot to come up with our drums.
What is your top tune of the moment?
Glenn: Horacio – Is It Because I’m Horacio (Raum Musik…)
Drew: That is a big tune, and I know this will change in about 2 weeks time but as for today a tune that I can’t get enough of is Sascha Dive ‘Jed Clayton’ (Samuel Davis Dark Beat Mix). There is something about this track that makes me love it, there’s nothing really special or unique about it, maybe the chunky beats and rolling deep bass? The percussion is fairly simple but I think what I really like about it is the sample that gets me everytime ‘I wanna go get a San Miguel before day break’ – words of a preacher!
Any news, updates, new productions, events, etc that you would like people to know about?
Both: mmmmmmm……. Check the spin out website!
Define yourselves in 3 words (each)
Drew: Down to earth.
Glenn: Geeky spaghetti monster.
