If you haven’t heard of Dirty Deal yet…you certainly will soon. It is the deadly brainchild of Marc Deal & Tobias Schmidt, of MANIAX and Moonbootica fame. The pair have been very good friends for many years and after spending time together dancing, listening to music and partying together in Ibiza they started their own collaboration to bring the good vibes into the studio. In fact, they often produce together on Sunday mornings after returning from Saturday night’s gig…to further fuel the creative fire. Their first track cropped up on Hell’s ‘International DJ Gigolos’ label and they have recently remixed for Poker Flat and Kompakt, all of which are deserving of huge recognition. They’re now part of the Spin Out family as we’ve got 3 forthcoming EP’s from the guys, the first eagerly anticipated release, ‘Ahhh / Ace Clear’ is out on Monday the 24th of August. We caught up with the guys to see what the (dirty) deal is…
How would you describe your sound at the moment?
It’s our own interpretation of electronical dance music, without having to obey any rules we don’t like. We wanted to create something a little bit different…we mixed up a few techniques and hip styles, put them through a sieve, added some big feelings and let the beat roll… We love bass drums and big basses and we both eat groovy things for breakfast. Dirty Deal Style!
Do you think what studio gear you use is important for creating your own sound?
Well yes, we often still use outboard instruments. Especially our bass,. it gives a special warmth to the songs.
Who or what has been your biggest influence?
Marc: Music in general and Tobi too!
Tobi: all music styles from soul to rock to dance to pop
What are you listening to at the moment?
Marc: I’m going through a strange time at the moment: I hardly listen to anything. I’m hoping to get new ideas without being influenced to much by other things.
Tobi :I’m in to 70 s music at the moment…
What are your plans for the summer?
Marc: Maybe going to Ibiza together and celebrating tobis birthday?! otherwise dj-ing and working on new stuff.
Tobi:I will be spending time with my family, moving into our new house and working!
What are your worst habits?
Marc: too many, but we try to be good people…
Tobi: I am always late…
What would you say is the best and worst thing about the Dance music scene?
Best: loud music and feeling the frequencies , nice people, can be very physical
Worst: music and people without any taste and on a bad trip!
When and where was your best gig?
Marc: With Moonbootica at sonne mond sterne 08. What a wild live performance! And DJ-ing as MANIAX with Ferris @ blue parade cologne, must have been 07 together with Westbam on a boat…great people and party
Tobi: Except from a few, all gigs are exceptional! It’s a passion for me…
What productions and releases have you been working on recently?
Marc: I am working on new Marc deal solo stuff and a new project with Marcacardipane. Besides that I’m still an activ part of MANIAX.
I would love to spend more time with Tobi and work on more things, but due to his work (Moonbootica) and his lovely new born daughter “Mena”, he hardly has any free time.
Tobi: …but apart from our 3 up-coming releases, we still managed to finish a new 12 inch …Golden Syrup!
And onto the first release for Spin Out…what was the inspiration behind Ahhh / Ace Clear?
Our alter ego knocked on the window while we where producing.He looked very funny…
What are your goals as musicians?
Long nights, long drinks, long legs….
